If you are a boss who wants to do great work, what can you do about it? Good Boss, Bad Boss is devoted to answering that question. Stanford Professor Robert Sutton weaves together the best psychological and management research with compelling stories and cases to reveal the mindset and moves of the best (and worst) bosses. This book was inspired by the deluge of emails, research, phone calls, and conversations that Dr. Sutton experienced after publishing his blockbuster bestseller "The No Asshole Rule." He realized that most of these stories and studies swirled around a central figure in every workplace: THE BOSS. Sutton discovered that most bosses -- and their followers -- wanted a lot more than just a jerk-free workplace. They aspired to become (or work for) an all-around great boss, with the skill and grit to inspire great work, commitment, and dignity among their charges.

Board Games - The Best Selling Board Games Of All Time

It must have been a crushing blow. It was 1934, the depths of the Great Depression. Charles Darrow was unemployed. But, he had an idea. Actually, he had a board game. He called the game Monopoly. He liked the board game and felt it was his mark to financial success and out of the desperation of the depression. Darrow had taken his game to the preeminent Parker Brothers game firm to publish and help him sell.

The Parker Brothers had agreed to look at the board game for Darrow. They were not impressed. Formed in 1883, by 16-year-old George Parker, the game publishing firm had been development and selling games and puzzles for 51 years. While that time they had seen success and failure. Parker Brothers knew the game business. They knew what worked and what didn't. They knew what sold and what didn't. Representatives of the giant game firm found 59 reasons why they did not think Darrow's game could be successful.

About George Washington For Kids Best Buy

Charles Darrow simply didn't agree. He believed. He decided to publish Monopoly himself and shop it through department stores. He had 5,000 copies of the board game printed.

Board Games - The Best Selling Board Games Of All Time

Hope was scarce While that harsh Christmas of 1934. Money was even scarcer. And, Monopoly was a hit. Nearly all 5,000 copies of the board game sold. Within a year Parker Brothers was publishing the game. It was the best selling game in America by 1936.

Monopoly is now published in 89 languages and over 200 million copies of the board game have been sold. More than 500 million people have played the game. It has also been adapted as an electronic game. Monopoly is firmly entrenched as the best selling board game of all time.

Monopoly is a relative upstart compared to other beloved board games.

The oldest known board game is called "The Royal Game of Ur" or the "Game of 20 Squares". This game was discovered in a 4,500-year-old tomb in southern Iraq. This game was played throughout the Middle East for perhaps 1,000 years or more. In fact, the rules of the game have been found in cuneiform tablets. Game aficionados can play this old game yet today, even though it has long ago faded from popularity.

Perhaps the oldest board game still beloved today is chess, which first appeared in India by the sixth century A.D. By the year 1,000 it was being played throughout the Middle East and in Europe. The rules and game board build have evolved somewhat over the centuries, but the game is still very much the same as the old Indians played it. They could hardly have dreamed, however, of the world-class chess match play or the electronic versions of the game we enjoy today.

Another very old, yet immensely beloved board game is checkers, also known as draughts. A form of checkers was being played by the Egyptian Pharaohs as early as 1600 B.C. This game has also evolved over the centuries. By the 12th century the game was adapted to the 64-square chessboard. Four hundred years later the rules entertaining capture were added, yielding essentially the same game we play today.

There is simply no way to tell how many copies of chess or checkers have been sold or how many people have played these games. If the numbers were known, they would have to be truly staggering.

Popular Board Games Share base Traits

Other top selling board games comprise Yahtzee, Scrabble, Mahjong, Trivial Pursuit, Battleship and the Risk game. Most of these games were industrialized While the 20th century and all are still big sellers and tremendously popular.

These beloved board games share some similar traits. Most of them involve definite strategies of play. When these strategies are employed successfully, the games are fun, entertaining and intensely rewarding as players effort to capture portions of the board and/or each other. Someone else base element in most of these board games is chance, or luck. Luck is introduced commonly by drawing cards or rolling dice. The element of occasion opens up possibilities for even more strategies of play. A final foremost trait of these games is that in one way or Someone else they reflect the lessons of life. They teach competition and sportsmanship. They teach strategy and the lesson of never giving up.

Perhaps that is why Charles Darrow was so attracted to Monopoly. He believed that success comes by employing sound strategies to following a dream and never giving up. We are glad that Darrow didn't give up. We are glad he didn't throw the board game with 59 things wrong in the trash bin as he left the Parker Brothers plant in 1934.

George Washington's Teeth Overview

A tongue-in-cheek dental history of our first President

"Poor George had two teeth in his mouth
The day the votes came in.
The people had a President,
But one afraid to grin."

From battling toothaches while fighting the British, to having rotten teeth removed by his dentists, the Father of His Country suffered all his life with tooth problems. Yet, contrary to popular belief, he never had a set of wooden teeth. Starting at the age of twenty-four, George Washington lost on average a tooth a year, and by the time he was elected President, he had only two left! In this reverentially funny tale written in verse and based on Washington’s letters, diaries, and other historical records, readers will find out what really happened as they follow the trail of lost teeth to complete tooflessness.

Illustrated in watercolors with subtle humor by Brock Cole, the main story is followed by a four-page time line featuring reproduced period portraits of Washington.

George Washington's Teeth is a 2004 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

George Washington's Teeth Specifications

The creators of George Washington's Teeth unhinge the jaws of history to examine the mouth of America's first president, tracking the poor man's dental woes as he gallops to war, crosses the Delaware, and, with only two teeth left, takes his place as leader of the country. Washington was plagued by black, rotting teeth from the time he was 22, losing about one a year until he was nearly "toofless" and had to have his first dentures made from a hippotamus tusk (that's right, not wood!). Poets Deborah Chandra and Madeleine Comora begin their quirky historical tale at a lively clip: "The Revolutionary War/ George hoped would soon be won,/ But another battle with his teeth/ Had only just begun..." Indeed. Evidently he was losing teeth even as he crossed the Delaware: "George crossed the icy Delaware/ With nine teeth in his mouth./ In that cold and pitchy dark,/ Two more teeth came out!" (Cleverly, illustrator Brock Cole mimics Emanuel Leutze's famous painting "Washington Crossing the Delaware," making Washington seem more uncomfortably tight-lipped than dignified.) The story ends happily ever after with the crafting of a nice new pair of ivory false teeth that allow George to dance around the ballroom through the night. Truth be told, however, he would be deeply troubled by his teeth until the day he died. A four-page, illustrated historic timeline of Washington's life (and mouth) completes this carefully researched, very funny, charmingly illustrated picture book that works to humanize a larger-than-life historical figure and in turn, history itself. Brilliant! (Ages 7 and older) --Karin Snelson

Competition, Envy & Jealousy Among Women

You're too fat or too skinny; your breasts are too big or too small; your hair is the wrong color, style or length; you would be cute if... lowest line no matter what you do, you are not good adequate to keep the man in your life or attract a new one. This is the message that the mass media bombard women with on a daily basis. When a woman dresses explicitly it is for the purpose of gaining admiration and concentration from both men and women.

If the large, impersonal communal buildings is telling women that they must constantly compete with each other, you can dream the psychological damage this causes at the smaller, personal communal buildings in female relationships with close friends and family. Most women are not intimidated by movie celebrities, playboy centerfolds and print media super models because they don't have corporeal way to their male partner. But when your friends and house show a bit too much skin it can be a daunting task to pretend that the man in your life did not see their cleavage in the two-sizes-too-small blouse. Many of us are shocked when friends betray friends on the talk shows; by admitting that they slept with their best friend's boyfriend or husband. Unfortunately, this happens more often than women are willing to admit to.

About George Washington For Kids Best Buy

As a counseling psychologist working with women, I have discovered that one of the indirect causes of why women are disloyal to each other is based on self-hatred and low self-esteem more so than the need to hurt other women. In therapy sessions women have revealed that the calculate that they slept with their friend's or relative's husband or boyfriend was not because the man was particularly appealing, but because of what the woman who had him represented. Therefore in essence sleeping with another woman's male partner was a way of indirectly possessing the qualities of the woman that the friend admired.

All names have been changed

Sonia, 33: "My relationship with my sister-in-law is putting a strain on the entire family. I hate her because my husband, her brother, is always bragging to me about how pretty and smart she is. I was so tired of hearing that sh--!" When she went on a company trip for two weeks, I asked her husband to sleep with me. His big mouth told the entire family. I denied it, but no one believed me. I got four kids and I dropped out of high school. I envy my sister in-law for getting a college study and not having a bunch of kids. Sometimes I just wonder what it feels like to be her. Her stomach is flat, she got the cutest shape. I figured that if I could get her man, then that means I am just as smart as she is."

Belinda, 28: "A female friend said to me about our mutual friend Tammy, 'We shouldn't even set our sights on the same type of man that Tammy attracts. Her body is slammin,' she can't get nothing but lawyers and doctors. With the way our fat asses look, we should be lucky if he got a job.' That hurt me so much. I can't believe that she said that to me. I love Tammy, but I couldn't help wondering if she opinion she was great than me. Yep, I slept with her, boyfriend. I had to. I had to prove to myself that I am just as good as she is. I don't know why she even bothers to sleep with him, he was a terrible lover, but I am an even worst friend."

Doreen, 24: "Your friend buys a dress that you love. Right? She knows that you love that dress, but you can't wear it because your stomach is too big. Fine. Whenever, we go shopping and see the same pair of shoes that we want to buy; You guessed it, it's always in her size and not mine. She just got promoted. I am happy for her, you know what I am saying. If somebody had an ice-cream cone and was always licking it in front of your face, talking about how good it is, wouldn't you just want to try it one time? I'll will never look like Sabrina in a dress, I can accept the fact that I wasn't made that way. When we are together people are always looking at her. But when I made love to her boyfriend, I pretended that I was her because I wanted to feel as gorgeous as Sabrina. I hate myself for what I did because she was my only friend. But I ultimately got to get something that I opinion that only she could have."

My Kid is Smart- So Why is He Getting Bad Grades?

In my years as a underground tutor, I've heard this phrase again and again. Parents who seek my services are regularly their wits' end trying to form out why their "smart" kids are doing poorly in school. The essential mind may first ask one of these parents, "Why do you think your child is so smart?"

First, let's take a step back and look at that word: "smart." This word is so overused and broad in definition, that I think it's just useless. Am I smart because I can right away multiply 23 and 8? Was your high school class valedictorian the smartest someone you knew back then? Was Einstein smart because he discovered the system of relativity? What about savants, who can memorize tens of thousands of years' worth of dates but can't tie their own shoes? practically every person in the world can be classified as "smart" in their own respect, so let's just keep that in mind as we added seek the ask posed in the title of the article.

About George Washington For Kids Best Buy

I think the real definition of "smartness" has nothing to do with Iq or the ability to do reasoning gymnastics such as quick math or fact memorization. We are All born with our own limitations. We can work to expand those limitations, but, in some regard, they are all the time there. It is naturally ignorant and incorrect not to riposte this. That being said, every person can follow despite their own limitations. However, in order to do this, one must understand his own limitations and form out how to best use his own natural instrumentalities. For example, I've seen a lot of students watch me do quick math in my head, and then they try to emulate me. Some succeed, while some just end up taking longer than if they had written it down or used a calculator. I encourage every person to try new techniques to see what works for them - that is the heart of really being smart. There are often many ways to do something - each trainee should do what works for That student. Sometimes that means working extra hard to understand a principle or memorize a fact, sometimes it means seeing at something some dissimilar ways, and sometimes it means just taking one look at something and understanding it immediately.

My Kid is Smart- So Why is He Getting Bad Grades?

Ok, so we've had a brief conference of what makes someone "smart" - now how can we help your smart kids get better grades?

First, the easy stuff: homework. Most kids I see who are doing poorly are whether not doing or turning in their homework! If this is a problem, get on your kids' back to Just Do It. Some techniques I've seen help are: threaten grounding, check teachers' daily homework websites, or invite your childrens' teachers to sign off on the daily homework assignment. I would Not advise distinct reinforcement here because homework is the absolute bare minimum of what a trainee is predicted to do. By this, I mean reinforcement like, for example, "If you turn in all your homework this semester, I will buy you a Playstation 3." No No No No No. "If you turn in all your homework this week, then I won't ground you this weekend" is far more appropriate. Homework just isn't a bonus, I can't stress that enough.

Next on the list is attitude. This can be a substantially more difficult hurdle to overcome if your child has apathy or animosity towards school. A mild case of bad attitude could be cured by a simple, realistic explanation of why school is important. You need credibility, so don't say something like "Trust me, I'm your mother." If you want your child to get good grades, elaborate why. Be honest, and speak from the heart. If you got bad grades when you were that age, think about how your life would be dissimilar if you had gotten good grades, if it would be dissimilar at all. You can use yourself as whether a distinct or negative example. A child with more severe attitude problems is tougher to deal with - you may want to consider a tutor. In most cases, I would shy away from sending your kid to a psychotherapist because I've rarely seen them genuinely connect with kids (that being said, I do think they can work if there are other things wrong - just don't send your kid to a shrink for bad grades, that's what tutors are for).

Effort is the amount one key to good grades. Students need to spend the time and seek the help they need to understand all things they are predicted to know. Teachers tell the students what will be on tests and quizzes, and there is regularly no excuse for being surprised by a test question. Teachers want their students to succeed. exertion on the part of the Parents is important too - get involved! See what your children are studying, see if they need help. If they do, try to help them yourself, it's great bonding! Otherwise, take them into school early or pick them up late to get help from the teacher, or hire a tutor.

Which brings me to the last point - I've found that good teaching is the "X-factor" in schoraly performance. I've never tutored someone who conception their instructor was good at teaching. I personally think this is a little unfair, because teachers have the Very difficult task of teaching 20-40 pupils, each of whom might have a dissimilar learning style. But I do believe that when a trainee tells me they have a "bad" teacher, they just have a instructor who is not reaching them for one presume or another. Like I said before, distinct concepts can be explained numerous dissimilar ways, and it is naturally impossible for one instructor to elaborate every conception every potential way. This is where surface help can come in very handy. A good tutor can swiftly form out what a student's learning style is, and cater to that particular trainee in a one-on-one situation. I call this the "x-factor" because 10 minutes with a tutor can be more essential than 2 hours in the classroom. Tutors can help save time by explaining concepts in ways that students just "get."

So as you can see, "smart" kids can get bad grades for a reason. Hopefully you can recognize what the question is, and help your kid start getting As asap.
